- Description: Before the world had a shape, the Spirit was already hovering over the dark. He still is
- Author: Joseph Kimani Kahenia

There are seasons of life that have no shape. You wake up and the day has no edges - nothing to hold, nothing to steer by. You are busy, but you are not *going* anywhere. People ask how you are and you say "fine," but the truth is you feel like you are treading water in the dark, and you have stopped being sure there is a shore.

If you have ever lived there, I want you to stay with me for the next few minutes -because the very first thing the Bible ever says is a word spoken directly into that exact place. This is my first post on this blog, and I couldn't think of a better place to begin than the beginning. So let's go slowly. Let's not rush this.

The book is called **Genesis**, and the word just means *origin* \-the source, the root, the place a thing starts. And the first sentence of the whole story is so short you could miss how enormous it is:

> "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." -[Genesis 1:1](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+1:1&version=NIV&ref=speraindeo.com)

Read the first four words again. *In the beginning, God.* Before there was a beginning to speak of -before light, before time, before the first grain of matter existed -there was already Someone there. He did not step onto the stage after the curtain rose. He built the stage. He wrote the play. He was holding the pen before there was paper.

This is one of the quietest and most staggering truths about God, and I want you to feel it, not just file it away: **God does not live inside time the way you and I do.** You and I are pinned to a single moving second. We cannot go back and undo yesterday; we cannot go forward and see tomorrow. But God is not on that line at all. He made it.

> "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God." -[Psalm 90:2](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+90:2&version=NIV&ref=speraindeo.com) *(suggested — your call)*

Sit in that for a second. It means that the God who is asking to lead your life is not anxiously waiting to find out how your story turns out. He is already standing on the last page. Your future is not a mystery He is nervously watching unfold - it is a place He already inhabits. Whatever you are walking toward, He is already there, and He is not afraid of it.

Now -watch what the earth actually looked like at the very start, before God shaped it. This is the verse I most want you to see:

> "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." -[Genesis 1:2](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+1:2&version=NIV&ref=speraindeo.com)

In the original Hebrew, "without form, and void" is two words -*tohu va-vohu* \-and they mean something like *waste and wild emptiness.* Chaos. Deep, dark water with nothing shaped in it yet. No order. No light. No form.

Tell me that doesn't describe a season you have lived through.

But here is the detail almost everyone reads past, and it is the whole heart of this: *the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.* That word "moved" is a strange and tender one in Hebrew - *rachaph.* It is the same word used later in Scripture for a mother eagle **fluttering and hovering over her nest**, over eggs that have not yet hatched, over young that cannot yet fly ([Deuteronomy 32:11](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy+32:11&version=NIV&ref=speraindeo.com) *(suggested -your call)*). It is the image of a bird brooding -warm, close, protective, *present* \- over something that has not yet come to life.

So look again at the chaos. The formless deep is not abandoned. God has not backed away from the mess in disgust, waiting for it to sort itself out. His Spirit is right there in the dark, *hovering* \-brooding over the waters like a mother over an egg that is about to crack open with life.

Friend, if your life feels like *tohu va-vohu* right now — waste and emptiness, dark water with no shape -hear this slowly: **the Spirit of God is not far off from your chaos. He is hovering over it.** Close. Warm. Present. Waiting, the way a bird waits over the nest - not because nothing is happening, but because life is coming.

And then, into all of it, God speaks. One sentence:

> "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." -[Genesis 1:3](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+1:3&version=NIV&ref=speraindeo.com)

Notice how He does it. He does not wrestle the darkness. He does not argue with it or explain it or wait for it to leave. He simply introduces light -and light does what light always does. It doesn't have to fight the dark. It just has to show up, and the dark has no choice but to give way.

You do not have to manufacture your own light before God will come near. You do not have to get your chaos organized first to make yourself presentable. That is not the order of the story. In the story, the Spirit hovers over the mess *first*, and God speaks light *into* it -and the shaping begins from there, one word, one day at a time.

That is the genesis of a new story. Not a finished one. Not a tidy one. But no longer a formless one - because the Spirit is hovering, and God has begun to speak.

*So if today has no shape, and the water is dark, don't despair over the chaos. Look instead for the One hovering over it. He has done His best work in exactly this kind of dark before. He is not waiting for you to make light. He is waiting to speak it.*

**But there is a question buried in that very first sentence that we ran right past - because when God created "the heaven and the earth," He was making two completely different worlds, and almost no one has ever stopped to ask what either of them truly is. That's where we go tomorrow.**
